A Pride and Prejudice Story

We open this story in Kent shortly before Darcy and Colonel Fitzwilliam arrive for there anual visit to Rosings Park.

The first shift in the tale comes with Elizabeth being befriended by Anne DeBurgh.

Anne having watched Elizabeth's effects on Darcy and her vivacious banter with him and the Colonel, decides that Lizzy is just the person she needs to help her win the heart of her cousin Darcy ,who she tells Elizabeth that she has always loved deeply.

Lizzy questions Anne as to his suitability as a husband as she still has her prejudices firmly in place and Mr Wykham lies still are believed.

Anne shows Lizzy her letters from Georgiana  and puts her straight but this is not enough to change the outcome when Darcy proposes to her in a different venue but with the same result.

As far as Elizabeth is concerned she does not want to be part of a love triangle between Darcy, Anne and Herself caring for her new friend.

How is he going to get out of this one and win the woman he loves.

Gosh, it is hard to know where to start on this one.

It’s a Pride and Prejudice what if? With so many if’s.

As the story progresses there are little alterations that change the plot, they don’t change the outcome or the characters, just alter the journey.

In Bewitched Body and Soul they make for quite a bumpy ride with a few new characters.

Caroline Bingley is not alone in her single minded determination to marry Mr Darcy. Lady Gwendolen is pretty determined to have Darcy for her self and on meeting Elizabeth Bennet in London (When she goes to stay with her Aunt and Uncle Gardiner, instead of with her sister Jane). She, decides that Elizabeth would be perfect for her Brother, lord Latham.

This book is well paced with plenty of new story that fits in well with the original, the characters have been kept fairly true, only Georgina seems a bit bolder in this story.

I did enjoy this book and found the ending very satisfactory and delightfully romantic.

This is a Darcy that would be well worth catching.

Death Comes to Pemberley by PD James

A Novel

The story is set in 1803. Darcy and Elizabeth and of course Jane and Bingley have both been married happily for six years and their nurseries are filling up and life is moving along smoothly.

The only problems on the horizon is which of Georgina’s suitors will she choose and will Lady Anna’s yearly ball be the high light of the season.

That is until Lydia arrives uninvited screaming at the top of her lungs in a speeding chaise.

She is screaming that Wickham is dead and this is where the fun starts.

Deep interwoven stories have to come to light and a murderer has to be found. Some of the twists and turns take you into the lives of the people in and around the Pemberley Estate.

The emotions are laid open for you to immerse yourself into the story following the police as they try with the very limited resources of the times to solve the crime. No finger printing or DNA for them to work with here and even a murder weapon is nowhere to be found.

I very much enjoyed this book and am happy to recommend it to you especially if you enjoy a good period who dunnit.

A Honeymoon Can Last A Lifetime 

Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice Continues...

So book number 4 starts with the Christmas season and a full house.

There is more detail to Darcy’s business as disaster strikes one of his mills in Derby, giving us  some deeper insights into the industry of the time.

This is followed by a christening, and then the beginning of a storyline for Colonel Fitzwilliam, giving Darcy’s cousin a great tale of his own struggles with love. Will he get his hearts desire?

We of course want Col Fitzwilliam to have the same kind of felicity as Darcy & Elizabeth have, but as with them, it isn’t that straight forward.

Georgina comes out and is presented at St James along with Lizzy to His Royal Highness, The Prince Regent. And, Darcy has to face the fact his little baby sister is out and attending balls at Almacks, something that he is coming to terms with.

There is quite a bit going on in this book and it does seem to me that when Sharon Latham lets her Darcy and Elizabeth out of the bed chamber, her stories are much more gripping.

This book had a quicker pace, covered more ground and had by-lines for quite a few of the original cast of Characters as well as some rather good new additions.

I am definitely liking these latter books better, maybe I am just not quite slushy enough (though my Husband would argue otherwise, as he regularly sees me dissolve into tears at sad films or while reading heartbreaking stories).

That’s the last Sharon Latham book for now.

Following on directly from the story in Darcy’s Passion all is pretty much bliss for the Darcy’s, until……..

Darcy leaves his Elizabeth at Pemberly to go and check out a threat to his beloved sister.

He is set upon and left for dead, a crazy but  engaging plot then ensues when he is rescued by a mad woman. I don’t want to give anything away but she makes Mrs Haversham seem sane by comparison.

Elizabeth is pregnant and holding the fort while Darcy has vanished.

Lady Catherine gets to be as evil and nasty as only she could be threatening and brow beating Elizabeth in Darcy’s absence. She, even purposely hides the knowledge of Darcy’s whereabouts when she finds out from Mr Collins where he is.

Unfortunately he is not the same man on his return.

This story has many highs and lows and at one point I was actually in tears (I am rather soppy). There are plenty of good sub plots with Kitty and Georgina both building their new relationships with the men in their lives.

The scene in this book where Wickham tried to make a move on Pemberly while Darcy is absent s priceless and gave me great pleasure.

So for Regina Jeffers books I say yes, yes and please give us more.

This is the what if? Pride and Prejudice

What if Elizabeth said yes the first time Darcy proposed to her at the vicarage in Kent.

That’s the premise, it follows Elizabeth and Darcy from that point onwards in a merry dance of misery and misunderstanding to the point where I could have slapped someone and it would not really have mattered who.

Both the main characters were totally annoying and Georgina was not very likable at all. I am sure Elizabeth Bennet could not have spent so long being biddable and suffering in silence.

Having said that it was still entertaining and I did need to keep turning those pages to see just how far the misunderstandings could go and to keep an audience gripped when basically you are retelling such a famous story is a feat.

At least it is not totally surprising that both the lead characters admit to contemplating suicide. If I may say so quite understandable.

Abigail Reynolds has written quite a few of these what if tales, I shall be very interested to see how the others pan out.
